La Merced is a popular neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is known as an area where poverty and unemployment rates are high and crime rates are the highest of any part of the city. Most buildings in this area do not have proper plumbing and access to running water. They tend to be run down and dilapidated, with many boarded up windows broken at their base and graffiti everywhere. The homeless population often inhabits this neighborhood as well as people who cannot afford rent anywhere else but still need shelter for themselves or their family members. The city is working to improve the infrastructure of La Merced by building low-income housing there. A new park called “Juan B. Justo” is also being built in an effort to make this neighborhood more livable for its residents while creating more green space for the community. It will include a place where people can gather, read or work out.
